A special initiative held over 2 days in partnership with the American University of Beirut, and the participation of more than 60 scientists, specialists and representatives from regional and international organizations, national committees on drugs, UN agencies, Arab funds and foundations, NGO, research institutes, universities and media.
The meeting had different objectives, most importantly to present and discuss the concept paper of the establishment of the center and explore the best ways to move forward with this initiative. Additionally, the meeting created a platform for the participants to network and exchange best practices and successful projects in drug prevention and research. Also, it highlighted future steps and possible cooperation with the related parties towards the establishment and sustainability of the center.
The meeting was held in a participatory approach, whereby the participants discussed collectively the concept paper of the center and made significant proposals and suggestions. On the 2nd day, the participants were divided into 3 groups to discuss and generate recommendations on the following three areas:
1. The administrative, legal and regulatory aspects of establishing the center;
2. The scientific, research and technical aspects of the center; and
3. The financial and human resources aspects to establish the center and potential partners.
Moreover, the meeting was covered by various local and regional media, who showed tremendous interest in this initiative.
